Transformer Placement
We will mount the transformer next to a grounded indoor or outdoor electrical outlet, preferably in a garage or basement. Transformers that are placed outside will be covered with a weather protective shield. If the transformer is installed outside, it will be mounted at least one foot above the ground on a wall, fence, post, etc.
Burying The Cable
Hiding the cable in a low voltage lighting installation is easy. It can be covered by soil, mulch or other landscape materials or if you are close to bushes or small landscape shrubs, it can be placed underneath and out of sight. When crossing a lawn our installers use a flat spade shovel (NO TRENCHERS) to cut an angled slice into your grass. The sod is separated and the cable is buried at least 4" deep. This is done to prevent damage to the cable if the lawn is aerated.
Fixture Installation
In-ground Fixtures
In-ground fixtures are used where they will remain permanently. These fixtures are used to light homes, buildings, fences, trees, flag poles, etc. Because these fixtures are placed in the ground, we add a bed of granular material under the fixture to help with drainage.
Underwater Fixtures
Underwater fixtures are used to illuminate fountains, ponds and creek beds. The fixtures are sealed to be placed in water. We use fixtures from manufacturers that are specifically designed for underwater use.
Tree Lighting Fixtures
When lighting a tree, we may choose to either light from the ground up or mount the fixture in the tree itself. There are different techniques to lighting different species of trees. Evergreen trees are lit differently than leafy deciduous trees.
Down Lighting
Down lighting simulates the natural light of a full moon, filtering through the branches of a tree. Down lighting involves the placement of fixtures on the tree itself. We use special brackets to mount the fixture in the tree and to protect the trunk/branches. Lights placed in trees need to maintained yearly to make sure the fixture and cable is not growing into the tree.
